In Lewy body disorders, a protein called alpha-synuclein forms abnormal clumps inside brain cells. These clumps are called Lewy bodies, and are named after Friedrich Lewy, the neurologist who first saw them. Scientists don’t yet know exactly how Lewy bodies form or how they harm brain cells.
