Alpha-lipoic acid is a fatty acid with antioxidant properties, at least in the lab. The substance is found in spinach, broccoli, brewer’s yeast, beef and organ meats. A small study of alpha-lipoic acid supplements for people with Alzheimer’s seemed to show it slowed progression of the disease. This study was “open label” [participants and researchers knew what treatment the participants were getting] and did not involve a placebo or dummy medication for comparison.
In two larger clinical trials, alpha-lipoic acid supplements (alone and in combination with other supplements) have been tested for treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Results have not been published.
