Is there such a profession? Would the person perform functions that family members of people with memory loss often do? Or is there more involved?

Oh yes, there are professional rememberers -- there also called care givers.
Remembering a persons past for them is a very important way to keep connected and to have a person enjoy those memories.
It works.
